This presentation will provide information about the dynamics present in relationships involving Intimate Partner/Domestic Violence (IPV/DV) and how these dynamics may impact criminal and child protection cases. Presentation of a case study from the perspective of an attorney experienced in defending such cases, and a trauma expert will explore when/how to use experts to assist in IPV/DV cases, perspectives on presenting a defense, and providing mitigation evidence for successful outcomes. Attorneys will improve their understanding of perpetrator tactics of both physical and psychological control, and how victims may react in ways that appear to be counterintuitive. By better understanding the elements of coercive control and counterintuitive survival reactions, attorneys will improve their ability to assess the impacts of IPV, and develop a cohesive narrative to either negate intent or provide mitigation evidence. Additionally, attorneys will gain understanding of how to best utilize expert assistance in IPV/DV cases.

Victoria Reynolds, Ph.D.
Victoria Reynolds Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist who specializes in the evaluation and treatment of the impacts of complex trauma on child and adult development and behavior. She consults as a national forensic trauma expert on State and Federal Capital cases, female cases involving domestic violence, as well as on military and civilian sexual assault cases. She evaluates and testifies on issues related to: Childhood Physical and Sexual Abuse, Intimate Partner/Domestic Violence, Traumatic Neglect, Combat Exposure, Military Sexual Trauma, etc. and trauma-related diagnoses such as PTSD, Dissociative Disorders etc.
In her clinical practice, she treats trauma-exposed journalists. She is a listed expert in the Journalist Traumatic Stress Network affiliated with Columbia School of Journalism. Previously, Dr. Reynolds was the Lead Psychologist in the Durham VA’s Women’s Health Center and the Male Military Sexual Trauma Program. Prior to this, she was a Clinical Associate in the Duke Dept. of Psychiatry, Behavioral Sciences, where she treated trauma-exposed children and parents at the Center for Child and Family Health, a community-based forensic and trauma treatment center. She got her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Duke University and has lived and worked in NC since 1995.
Barbara Lagemann, JD
Barbara Lagemann is a proud 2009 graduate of the North Carolina Central University School of Law. Her undergraduate degree in Social Work is from North Carolina State University. Since 2010, she has served as an Assistant Public Defender in the Durham County Office. Barbara primarily handles upper level felonies, but practices in every criminal courtroom in Durham from time to time. Barbara also serves as the office’s Immigration Screening Attorney, Probation Court Trainer, and NC Forensic Consultant Network representative.
