This presentation will define and discuss the concept of structural competency related to mental health. The influence of traumatic stress and social structures on the identification, treatment, and outcomes of mental health concerns will be reviewed. Lastly, there will be a discussion of how a comprehensive evaluation may consider and conceptualize structural factors, trauma, and effectiveness of mental health services in a legal setting.

Presenter:
Courtney Lockhart McMickens, M.D., M.P.H., M.H.S. is a double board-certified general and child and adolescent psychiatrist and an Associate Consultant at Lorio Forensics. Her work has been in areas of social and structural drivers of health, providing mental health services for children involved with child welfare, improving readiness for integrated mental health transformation, and addressing childhood trauma and mental health needs within under resourced communities. Dr. McMickens is also Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences within the Division of Child/Family Mental Health & Community Psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center.
Dr. McMickens earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School where she also received an MPH from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She completed residency in general psychiatry at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at Cambridge Health Alliance/Harvard Medical School. She went on to complete the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program at Yale School of Medicine, earning a Master of Health Sciences (MHS) degree.
