Defense-Based Advocacy and the Domestic Violence Movement is a free three-part professional development series for community-based advocates, attorneys who work with victims of battering, and anyone interested in learning more about victims of battering charged with crimes.
Participants may choose to attend all or some of the sessions. The series has been updated with new information for 2022.

Presenters:
Cindene Pezzell, Esq.: Cindene is the Legal Director at NCDBW. Cindene oversees the Legal Team at NCDBW; she and her colleagues provide specialized technical assistance to defense teams, including attorneys, expert witnesses, anti-domestic violence advocates, and victims who have been charged with crimes. Cindene also develops legal materials and resources related to defense-based advocacy, and consults on policy and legislation impacting victim-defendants. Cindene is an experienced trainer who designs and conducts programs around the country on topics related to advocating for and defending charged and incarcerated victims of battering. Cindene is also a former public defender with the Defender Association of Philadelphia, where she focused primarily on trial work.
Quetita Cavero, Esq.: Quetita Cavero is the Senior Staff Attorney at NCDBW. Quetita brings valuable experience as a former assistant district attorney, a victim advocate in a prosecutor’s office, and a staff attorney at a battered women’s organization. She was an assistant district attorney and victim advocate with the Santa Fe District Attorney’s office in NM. She also worked at Women Against Abuse Legal Center in Philadelphia, PA, representing victims of battering with disabilities in family court proceedings. At the National Clearinghouse for the Defense of Battered Women, Quetita provides direct technical assistance to defense teams, researches and develops legal materials, and conducts training programs.
