Forensic evidence can play a powerful role in sex offense prosecutions and evaluating the forensic science evidence is essential to effective representation. This practical primer will introduce defense attorneys and team members to the forensic evidence commonly encountered in sex offense cases, including DNA and biological evidence, sexual assault examinations, forensic interviews, toxicology, and digital evidence. Attendees will learn practical strategies for reviewing forensic reports and underlying records, identifying weaknesses in the State’s scientific evidence, developing effective cross-examination questions, and determining when assistance from an independent expert is needed.

Presenter:
Attorney Jason St. Aubin began his career at the Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office in 2005. In 2022, he went into private practice, eventually starting his own firm St. Aubin Law PLLC. In addition to his practice, Jason teaches as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Illinois College of Law, coaching trial teams for competition. Previously, he taught at the Charlotte School of Law as faculty for 9 years. He also acts as an independent consultant for attorneys through the North Carolina Indigent Defense Service. Jason lectured at the first UNC School of Government program on Defending Against Sexual Assault Cases earlier this year. He is currently the President Elect of the 26th Judicial District Bar of Mecklenburg County.
