Maximizing the Digital Tools We Already Have

This program will prepare attorneys and defense teams to utilize technology tools that many offices already have access to in order to maximize effectiveness in representing their clients in cases involving large amounts of digital discovery.

Speakers will discuss accessible tech tools for addressing common problems in criminal cases, including sharing large files with experts and other team members. Tools for transcribing audio or video evidence will be presented. Additionally, translation tools will be discussed. Best practices for the ethical use of AI tools will also be reviewed. Novel uses of AI, such as to give feedback on a presentation will be discussed. Finally, tips for efficient management of email systems will be provided. This program aims to meet the needs of attorneys and criminal defense teams with varying levels of experience utilizing tech products in casework.

Registration:
This program is part of the 2025 IDS Forensic Science Education Series. The webinars will be presented monthly and are free to attend. Use this link to register for all webinars in the series and attend any that are of interest.

Presenters:
Jamie Blackwell, MS
Jamie serves as the Business Process Manger for the Office of Indigent Defense Services.  He has 20 years of NC public service, previously working for the NC State University Dept. of Biological and Agricultural Engineering and NC Dept. of Environmental Quality.  During that time, he developed research methods, provided technology support, data analysis and process improvement to support multidisciplinary teams of researchers, engineers, planners and administrative personnel.  Mr. Blackwell is a graduate of North Carolina State University receiving a B.S. in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering Technology and a M.S. in Natural Resources, specializing in Geographic Information Systems. 

Anthony Monaghan, JD
Anthony Monaghan is an Assistant Public Defender with the Mecklenburg County Public Defender’s Office where he currently represents clients charged with homicide offenses. He is a Board Certified Specialist in State Criminal Law.
